I’m thinking to physique my possess computer with most 6TB element in a RAID5 array. Lately i’ve feature a aggregation most those things to inform myself but there are whatever things most grouping don’t requirement but I am fascinated in.

- Software-Raid for my 6TB storage
- Raid5 is OS-free –> Storage only

So today to my questions:
- Should i ingest hdds with 5400 rate or connatural ones? it’ll be 1 gbit meshwork bill exclusive so i conceive 5400 is enough. And they requirement inferior noesis attain inferior racket and terminal individual right?
- What element should i use? Starting with a bounteous sufficiency frame to processing noesis and noesis maker i got no evidence what a pc same that needs. Since i’d same to ingest code RAID I don’t poverty to pay money on RAID-Cards.
- Eventually i’ll separate Xen on that thing. Nothing likewise fancy, meet activity around a bit. What OS should i use? I undergo Ubuntu but i heard CentOS is beatific for servers same that.

Your bottleneck will be your network upload speed to the internet. I doubt you will have enough bandwidth to make use of high performance drives or CPUs, so just about anything will probably work ok at first.
Most disk drives now are 7200 rpm - older drives were 5400, but lower capacity, that would make it hard to get 6TB storage with just older 5400 rpm drives. Most home computers will be limited to 6 SATA drives, maybe 8. You would be limited to a 4,5 or 6 drive Raid5 array (since you have Raid 1 for OS). So, to get 6TB Raid5 storage on a single home computer, you have to use 1.5TB drives (or thereabouts).
Using a second machine with FreeNAS may enable you to expand to a couple more drives…
